1 | In India, agricultural practices are highly localized occupations and display a lot of variability in cultural practices and varietal preferences across regions. Further, with the opening up of the world market, there is a flow of trade in the agricultural products. It is, therefore, necessary to define and assign certain common minimum standards to facilitate trade in these products and to win the confidence of the consumers within the country and outside. With this in view this standard has been originally formulated in the year 2010 to standardize crop based agricultural practices in India keeping in mind the best of international practices and suiting the needs of the Indian farmer. It was designed in a manner that facilitates bench marking with similar documents at international level, if the need arises to give it an international dimension.
2 | In this first revision, the requirements and compliance criteria of the standard has been aligned with latest version of IndGAP issued by Quality Council of India, New Delhi (IndGAP standard is equivalent to Global GAP standard). Necessary modifications have been done in order to make the standard implementable in Indian Agriculture scenario.
3 | In this revision, new requirements pertaining to control points and compliance criteria modifications have been added. Along with the above, all the compliance criteria have been marked as either ‘major’ or ‘minor’; removing the earlier provided ‘recommended’ criteria.
4 | This standard takes into account not only the quality and safety of the crop obtained from a unit area but also the care and attention gone into integrating pre-harvest practices like soil and water management, nutrient management and pest management, harvesting, post-harvest handling, packaging, storage and other logistics. The objective is to ensure food safety, occupational health/safety/welfare, and wherever possible animal welfare. The entire operation is also intended to make farming practices environment friendly. |
