| 1 | Atmospheric ammonia presents three major environmental issues: a) Odor – Ammonia has a strong and unpleasant odor. b) Ammonia at high levels is toxic to humans and animals. It is known to cause irritation to skin, eyes and respiratory tract. c) Ammonia reacts with atmospherically formed sulfuric and nitric acids and forms precipitated salts which contribute to ambient level of fine particles. Keeping the above in mind, proper methodology to accurately determine the concentration of ammonia in ambient atmosphere is of utmost importance. This standard describes Indophenol method for the measurement of ammonia in ambient air. | |
