Sl.No. Synosis Points
1 Liquid-in-glass thermometers are used in industry, laboratories, teaching institutions, homes, hospitals etc. wherever measurement of temperature has any significance. As these thermometers are fragile and are designed to serve a large variety of purposes, it is important that they conform to some specific sets of requirements depending on their end use, so that they provide dependable service and are easily replaceable in case of breakage. For this purpose, it is considered necessary to lay down general guidelines for formulation of specifications for such thermometers.
2 This standard was originally published in 1977. The first revision of this standard was undertaken in 2018 by adopting ISO 386: 1977. Later, in 2022, the ISO decided to withdraw its thermometer standards in relation to the Minamata Convention where mercury shall be removed from products by 2025. However, the committee responsible for formulating this standard decided to revise the standard and by providing alternative thermometric liquids in addition to the mercury as liquid-in-glass thermometers are still in use in the country.
