1 | Radon (222Rn), along with its progeny, is considered to be main source of human exposure to natural radiation. UNSCEAR[1] suggests that, at the worldwide level, radon accounts for around 52 % of global average exposure to natural radiation. The radiological impact of isotope 222 (48 %) is far more significant than isotope 220 (4 %), while isotope 219 is considered negligible (see Annex A of IS 18066 (Part 1)). For this reason, references to radon in this document refer only to radon-222. | |
2 | Inadequately ventilated dwellings, confined workplaces, tourist caves, and underground workings, including mines, are identified as significant potential sources of radon. Prolonged exposure to elevated levels of 222Rn (radon) and its progeny has been linked to an increased risk of lung cancer. Additionally, confounding factors such as smoking can exacerbate the carcinogenic potential of 222Rn and its progeny. The soil gas is identified as the primary source of residential radon through infiltration pathways. |
