1 | The Decrepitation Index (DI), the parameter used to describe the extent of decrepitation, is described as the ratio of the mass of particles <6 mm after pre-heating to the total mass of the sample. As the cold burden lands on the top of the hot burden in the furnace and descends, it is subject to thermal shock, which may also cause breakdown of the lump particles. To assess this behaviour of lump ore, the decrepitation index (DI) is usually measured in accordance with ISO 8371. The decrepitation index quantifies the resistance of lump ore to thermal degradation. A high decrepitation index results in more iron loss through dust generation and has a negative impact on blast furnace permeability. |
