The purpose of EIA is to identify potential environmental impacts from major development proposals and to propose means to avoid or reduce the adverse impacts. It has increasingly become a key aspect of many large-scale planning applications. The objective of environmental impact assessment in the context of river valley projects is to assess both the positive and negative impacts of a project so that necessary environmental management measures can be adopted, wherever necessary, so as to minimize the adverse impacts while maximizing the benefits. | |
