2 Sodium nitrate and potassium nitrate are used in batch compositions of glass, enamel frits and glazes in which their chief function is to oxidize organic matter which may contaminate batch materials, prevent reduction of some of the batch constituents, help maintain colours and accelerate the melting and fining processes.
