Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the National Standards Body of India, involved in the activities of standardisation, marking and quality certification of goods and related matters. The standard mark of BIS is a widely accepted benchmark of quality assurance.
The COVID-19 pandemic has taken the world by storm. With the surge in cases, the number of patients requiring hospitalization has also gone up and there is an imperative need for the hospitals to follow relevant requirements for hospital planning and use good quality hospital equipment. This is the best way to ensure optimum quality of care for the patients.
BIS has set various standards in the field of Hospital Planning and Management and Hospital equipment. IS 12433(Part 1) : 1988 specifies the basic requirements for hospital planning for up to 30 bedded hospitals and IS 12433(Part 2) : 2001 specifies the same for 100 bedded hospitals. IS 13808(Part 1) : 1993 specifies Quality Management procedures for Out-Patient Department (OPD) and emergency services for 30 bedded hospitals. Moreover, there are standards on diagnostic and blood transfusion services, Quality Management for nursing services and Operation Theatres and hospital support services and hospital equipment management.
For hospital equipment, the Bureau has formulated various standards on hospital beds, beds for Intensive Care Units (ICUs), operation table, blood bags (plastic collapsible containers) for human blood and various blood components, stretchers, trolleys etc. The complete list of all such standards is available on the BIS website www.bis.gov.in.
