BIS has formulated Indian standards for various winter essentials like IS 7750 Cashew nuts; IS 7749 Walnuts; IS 16117 Chilgoza nuts; IS 10619 Spiced and sweetened cashew nuts; IS 966 Desiccated coconut, IS 12923 Cane jaggery, IS 13952 Palm jaggery and IS 7592 Peanut chikki. The Indian Standards on dry fruits prescribe quality parameters such as maximum moisture content, ash content, acid insoluble ash, free fatty acids etc. The standards also prescribe hygiene criteria and microbiological requirements for nuts. Packaging and labeling requirements are also stipulated to enable misleading claims and enable consumers to make informed choices. Products like peanut chikki prescribe limit for total sugars and the minimum requirement for fats and proteins. The standards on jaggery prescribe total ash, sulphated ash, moisture content and limits of sulphur dioxide.

A very nice initiative taken by BIS. It’s was beyond of our imagination that very small food grade item like jaggery or chikki etc, one day will come under BIS standardisation.
