The positive impact of BIS on the Education sector

Education is an integral part of the society and the quality of its providers is of universal concern. Knowledge, skills and attitudes can help learners only through an open flow of ideas. While educational institutions hardly provide guaranteed positive outcomes, they can contribute a lot to stimulate learning and enhancement of its quality. Therefore it is imperative to have a standardised approach to ensure that students receive quality education seamlessly.

In view of this, a national level committee on “Education, Education services and related services” was constituted with the aim to standardise it and adhere to quality standards. It also implied to synchronise with the ISO Project committee (ISO/PC288) Education Management Systems’ requirements with guidance for use.

Under the guidance of the committee, an Indian Standard on Education Management System – Quality Requirements for Educational Organisations, IS 16533:2016 was formulated. This standard specifies that an educational institution has to demonstrate its ability to meet students’ requirements under applicable statutory and regulatory norms. It also assures of conformity to students’ and key stakeholders’ requirements. Employing a focussed method or system to provide educational service by way of providing effective and efficient methods by educational organisation creates a positive impact on its overall performance. To harmonise with international standards, IS/ISO 21001:2018 superceded Indian standard IS 16533:2016.

IS/ISO21001:2018 provides a common management tool to educational organisations to focus on learners and other relevant bodies. It addresses the requirements of educational institutions through a high level structure, identical core text and common terms with core definitions to benefit users implementing multiple ISO Management System standards.

The other International Standards are available in the field of education;

- ISO 29993:2017, Learning services outside formal education – Service requirements, focuses on educational services in a general sense.
- ISO 29991:2014, Language learning services outside formal education – Requirements, is aimed at organizations that provide language courses solely or alongside other courses.
  ISO 29994, Learning services outside formal education – Additional requirements for distance learning (under development).
- ISO 29992:2018, Assessment of outcomes of learning services – Guidance. The focus of this standard is on assessment of the outcome of learning.
- ISO 29995, Learning services outside formal education – Terminology (under development). The focus of this standard is to facilitate comprehension of the terms and definitions of learning services.
  Knowledge is power and education is the platform which holds the progress of our society. A well-defined approach and standardisation can fortify the education sector which spearheads innovation and positively impacts the economy.
