Today we are celebrating World Tourism Day and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) proudly reaffirms its dedication to advancing quality, safety, security, sustainability, industry development, consumer protection, and innovation in the travel, tourism, and hospitality sectors. This is a significant day for all of us, as it highlights the importance of tourism as a key driver of economic growth, cultural exchange, and sustainable development.
As India’s National Standards Body, BIS reaffirm its commitment by formulating standards in the field of Tourism & Hospitality Services Sector. Through the formulation of standards, BIS aim to ensure safe, secure, enjoyable, memorable and responsible travel experiences for all. Standardization in the tourism sector has enhanced service quality in the country by fostering consistency and reliability. It also brings numerous advantages, such as streamlined processes, technological innovation, consumer confidence, and environmental responsibility.
Recognizing the importance of Tourism & Hospitality Services Sector, BIS has established the Travel, Tourism, and Hospitality Related Services Sectional Committee, SSD 02, which has published 30 Indian Standards in the key areas such as sustainable tourism, accommodation, hospitality, medical and wellness services, adventure tourism and recreational activities. Our ongoing efforts are focussed on developing indigenous standards on cruise tourism, hiking and trekking, destination management organization, sustainable beaches, and requirements for organizing exhibitions.
On the global stage, BIS actively contribute in development of international standards under ISO committee (ISO/TC 228 – Tourism and Related Services), to ensure harmonization of Indian standards with international standards. Indian experts are deeply engaged in shaping international standards on tourism through participation at international level and also ensure Indian perspective.
Let’s come together this World Tourism Day to promote a vibrant, and sustainable tourism industry, fostering responsible travel for future generations.
